I believe ACS must remain a strong force and advocate for the chemical sciences and chemical scientists/engineers at the national, state and local levels. Because while chemistry has shone brightly as a beacon of hope with COVID treatments and many scientific breakthroughs may be lauded at the moment,
the planet needs sustainable solutions that chemistry can provide,
the general public still has a distrust of the scientific process, and
the chemistry community needs to ensure that diversity, equity, inclusion and respect COME TO FULL FRUITION with ACS “walking the walk” in all we do for ALL PEOPLE.…..
I have always believed in the power of chemists and chemistry for creating good for everyone… let’s work together to CONTINUE to show the world the GOOD chemists and chemistry can do….
Greater and better ideas and solutions come when we listen to, learn from and acknowledge each other. Connection and Advocacy all year long using virtual and hybrid platforms to enable interactions among ACS members across the globe and with other technical societies to advocate for chemistry and to discuss topics important to all scientists; to support chemistry-related topical meetings involving divisions/committees/local sections; to help members grow their connections, gain skills and network for job opportunities; and to build a Virtual ACS Speaker Service with Local Sections to bring more diverse speakers to all our members and builds a retrievable archive for future use.
ONE PLANET….it is more apparent than ever that we must all work together and all EMBRACE the need to ensure EQUITABLE SAFETY and SUSTAINABILITY for all people… Safety and Sustainability with advocacy for safety in all walks of chemistry and increasing ACS’s support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through internationally-aligned thematic programming. It involves working with ACS Divisions and Committees to integrate the SDGs into their strategic plans, and exploring opportunities for co-sponsored programming with other professional societies. ACS can help multiply the impact of sustainability globally.
In our diversity LIES OUR STRENGTH….to do anything. Achieving diversity, inclusion, justice, equity and respect in all its forms is the bedrock upon which all initiatives must be built and measured. This is essential to ensure all people can freely contribute to the fullest extent to technical solutions to global challenges, while building meaningful careers and living fulfilling lives. WORKING TOGETHER - as chemists, at ACS in our symposia, programs and culture of respect for each other we can imagine and create the more just and verdant world we all want.
Innovation and Invention DO NOT just happen. People make it happen, WE make it happen…CHEMISTS make it happen. Innovation and Career Development go hand-in-hand for scientists and engineers in the 21st century. It’s a foundational construct for: building highly relevant programming for industry members and bringing together students/student chapters with industrial mentors. We can do this by working to rebuild and retain industrial membership by reaching out to science-intensive start-ups and demonstrating the importance and relevance of ACS membership; and by working together to ensure ACS is the place the next generation looks to for access to today’s innovators.
